Chris's Bio
Born May 14, 1978 in Albury NSW Australia, Chris is the youngest of 4 siblings-2 of who compete in Ironman. Chris lived in Australia until 1999, and then moved to New Zealand to start a small construction business.  In November 2001, Chris started competing in triathlons.  After his final amateur race in New Zealand in March of 2004, he began his professional racing career.   Since 2004, Chris has raced as a professional in 51 Ironmans with 21 podium and 35 top 10 finishes. Chris has had the chance to work along side some of the great coaches and athletes in the sport of triathlon: Scott Molina, Dave Scott, and Brett Sutton, to name a few. Chris is one of a select group of elite athletes who carries the title of being a 7 time Ironman Champion.

Chris is known as “Big Sexy” in the triathlon community due to his incredible journey of being an overweight baker who weighed 250 pounds, to a successful professional triathlete.  In 2013 Chris and his wife, Erika, launched a racing team of brand ambassadors-BIG SEXY RACING, comprised of 100 athletes from all over the U.S.  In 2015, Chris launched the coaching company BSRX3, whose mission to guide athletes to fulfill their goals-whether competing in a marathon, sprint, Olympic, or full distance Ironman.

In his spare time Chris enjoys coaching and spending time with his family and friends.  Chris now divides his year between Austin, TX and Boulder, CO.

Chris On Coaching
I came from a very early sporting background of playing field hockey as a youngster. I played hockey at State Level before learning what it was like to party. From my late teens to early 20’s I blew out to 240 pounds, before I realized how much I missed sport.

I took-up triathlon in late 2001 and kicked-it-off with a 70.3 race in Forster Australia. From there, the rest is history. Since my first race in 2001, I’ve now completed 30+ Ironman races. I competed as an age grouper in 5 of the races whilst I was running my construction business. My personal best is 7:33 over the IM distance and 3:48 over 70.3 distance.

In my athletic career, I’ve had the chance to work along side some of the great coaches and athletes in the sport of triathlon: Scott Molina, Dave Scott, and Brett Sutton, to name a few.

I offer a very personal based coaching package and like to work with motivated and driven people. I have athletes from all ranges of ability and age. But, we all have one thing in common: we are driven to achieve our goals. That may be to achieve that midnight-hour cut-off, get a Hawaii slot, or for some to dip under that magical nine-hour barrier.

If you would like some more information about how I work, please send me a message below to touch base. I will let you know the details, costs.

Working with your personality to develop your programEach person has their own personality and habits. I feel it’s my job to find your blind spots to help you become aware to improve and find your good habits to help you continue to grow with them. Usually this lies within your entire life habits and rolls over into your athletics.

Triathlon is a start to finish line complete sport Too many people speak about their fast bike or run, all too often to fall short of their actual triathlon goal. I like to focus on triathlon as a sport in itself and develop an athlete to reach their goals in a complete package from start line to finish line.

Keeping an athlete’s strength strong and develop their weaknessEach of us have our strengths. Often we know our weakness and focus solely on improving it. I like to find a person’s strength and continue to make it their weapon. Then build their weakness towards being stronger.

Clear goal settingMapping out what YOUR goals are. Short term, long term and dream goals. It’s important to clearly state to yourself and to someone else what your goals are. That is the first step in setting up your life to achieve them.

Consistency Cumulative volume over time. I believe in a program that is consistent. Fitness builds over days, weeks, months and years. The ability to “back it up” is one of the most valuable lessons I learned over the years and is the key to success.

Clear honest communication between coach and athleteI need you to be honest with yourself and share that honesty with me.

Here are the key components of the program that I’d like to deliver for you:

- Answering of e-mails and questions within 48hrs (unless notified traveling).
- Schedule with personalized sessions outlined.
- Race planning and post race feedback.
- Clear goal setting- short term and long term.
- Weekly feedback on training
- Nutrition planning upon request.
- Communication is through e-mail /phone and text msg

Testimonials

Laurent Painchaud

Athlete
"In full transparency, BSR is both my client and my coach. That being said, there is no denying the results. Chris McDonald and the team at Big Sexy Racing are transforming this 40+ husband, dad and entrepreneur into a real contender. I gave the mandate to Chris that I want to get to Kona and I'm fully confident that he's going to deliver. We don't get caught up in all of the minutiae of the data, but I know that it's all there embedded in my plan. The BSRX prescription is clear, adaptive and fits my busy schedule like a glove. The work is hard, trust me, but the rewards are worth every drop of blood, sweat and tears! "

Brett Hill

Athlete
"When I began I was a middle of the pack athlete, with an IM best of just over 11 hours and a HIM best of 5:08. Over the previous two years we’ve worked together and had a lot of fun, but also had some great results. I’ve been able to take my IM time to under 9 hours and record a HIM PB of 4:15 on a hilly course!"
